B.Payne

B.Payne, Brandon Payne, is a rapper/entertainer originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but stationed in Orlando for college at UCF. His lyrics are about real life and many of his songs are dedicated to his late mother. Check out the interview as we discuss his side of being an artist.

How long have you been doing music? Describe your style of music.

I've been writing since I was very young. Always liked to write. I didn't start recording myself til like the 10th grade. I finished my first mixtape and kept going lol. Made alotta mixtapes that I sold throughout high school. Once I got to college back in 09, I started going ham. I became real serious and started making bigger moves like concerts and booking other shows. My style of music is a combination of lyricism of northern rappers and the "vibe" of the southern rappers. I just make music, don't really ever classify, just real ass music ya know.

Yea, your music is very pleasing to the ears. How do you differentiate amongst your competitors in the industry?

At this point, I don't really consider them as competitors parse. For now they are inspiration, but when I make it (and yes I said when), I hope to just bring the Lauderdale vibe to the rest of the world.

Nice way to specify them as your inspirations. Who inspires you?

Honestly, everyone in this world inspires me in their own way. My deceased mother inspires and has always inspired me to do whatever I wanted that would benefit my future. My father inspires me to be about my business and to do anything I care about whole-heartedly. As far as other artists, not just rappers, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Jay-Z, Kanye West of course, newcomers like Kendrick Lamar, K.R.I.T., ASAP Rocky, and the list will go on for days if you let it lol.

Wow!! LOL. Well it's nice to see that your inspirations are definitely not limited and diverse. Who are some artists have you worked with? Locally? Internationally?

Locally, I've worked with the 3TARDS, C-Note$, Bezz Believe, Joe Clark, 90-Nine, and a few singers named Neci and Aleisha.

I'm aware of some of those artists. They make good music. Do you have anything coming up? Events or new music?

Always yo. Parties, shows, new singles, random remixes just for my supporters to jam to while they wait for a full project. One big event coming up is my annual concert doooooe. That shit bouta CRAM so hard. I've done a big full length concert once a year since 2010 and always had a bigger turn out at the years progress. I plan on this one being even more of something to remember. Planning for February 2012 and calling it "The Beginning of The End" based off the 2012 myths.

Well, I think the title "The Beginning of The End" definitely will attract a crowd since you're basing it off the 2012 myths. Why should people listen/buy your music?

Of course they should if they wanna live lol. I'm just playing, but yea of course any artist would say that. I want critics, supporters, the whole nine. It's all about exposure. But buying my music as aof now, don't do it cuz I ain't been selling it. That's probably some bootlegger tryna rip you off lol.

Wow, well thanks for the heads up! What are your future plans as an artist?

Honestly, I just plan to keep perfecting my craft and growing. I plan to be successful and I'm taking the steps to get there, but what the future holds is for God to show me in the long run through my hard work and dedication.

P.S. CRAMdat!!!! That's something I created and like to say. Stands for "Creating Real Ass Music". SWAG

I must say, I enjoyed this interview. The vibe I get from B.Payne is "realness". It's important to stay true to yourself as you progress through life. I recommend everyone to support this artist so that he can soon say "I made it".

No limits: Working In The Entertainment Industry

I've interviewed someone special, Ana Reina. She is my marketing teacher from my bachelor's program. Outside of teaching, Ana is very active in the entertainment business. Her work ethic is inspirational and she is someone important to know.

What different sectors of the entertainment business do you work in?

Artist Development and Management
Event Management
Marketing & Promotions
Public Relations

Wow, you have a wide range of areas in this business. When did you first become an Artist Manager? Who are some artists that you work with?

I've become an Artist Manager in year 2000. Some artist I work with; Anduze, Milka, Just Real, Afterglow Radio, The Lighter Exchange, Emily Kopp, Beebs and Her Money Makers

I've heard of some of those artist. Why is negotiating important for your part in the industry?

Negotiation is very important. It is what puts this industry in motion. Every day deals are being made.  A lot of people assume that negotiation is about money but true negotiation, especially for broke local acts, is the barter system of trade. Full Sail University is a perfect example of this. There are a lot of students who are looking to fill up their reel demo, art portfolio, or resume. A lot of my acts have taken advantage of that by providing them the opportunity to produce a video, create branding, develop album artwork, etc for them in trade.

Is there a time when you had to  separate the people from the problem when negotiating deals?

I was taught a very important lesson once that you should not hire anyone you cannot fire. This means if you have your mother or best friend work for you and if it ever came down to it, could you fire them? Or be forced to just deal with it because you felt bad. Business is business and should never get personal. Always separate the two. Your business is your priority and along the way you will find the ones that are on board 100% and you will weed out the ones that aren't.

What other sectors of the entertainment business would you like to work in the future?

Producuing (i.e. Commercials, Films/Videos, etc)
Project/Operations Manager

Starting Off On The Right Note: Working for The Wendy Williams Show

I've had the privilege to interview a long time friend, Dianamarie Borrero. We've met in college and kept in touch over time. Currently, she has been granted the opportunity to work at the Wendy Williams show. I've interviewed her to discuss her perspective/role in the business and how negotiation plays apart.

Where did you attend college and what did you major in?

I attended Full Sail University and majored in Entertainment Business Bachelors Program.
I've received my bachelors in the same degree.

Would you say that Full Sail University preps you for the real world?

Full Sail University definitely prepared me for the real world. I learned more about the industry and was able to communicate well with individuals already in the industry.

I know from attending Full Sail that networking is a major factor especially when working in the entertainment industry. Which sector of the industry do you work in? How long?

I work in the Television Industry. I began working here on August 2011.

Congratulations by the way! I know most college students don't get the opportunity to working in the field that their degree is in. How does it feel to work for the Wendy Williams show? What's your current job description?

It's a privilege to work for The Wendy Williams Show. To work at a show that I've been a fan of for years feels very rewarding and fulfilling. My current job description is Audience Assistant. I'm in charge of booking the shows every day and making sure that we have a full studio each day.

That sounds like a cool job position. Is this where you've imagined working after college?

I've never really pictured myself working in television after college. I also saw myself working in the music industry instead. However, working in the television industry has opened my eyes to newer things. I've learned to love the television industry in a way that I never thought was possible.

Well that's amazing because you never know which direction life is going to take you. How important is your role to the company?

My role is very important to the company. Without an audience department at a live show there really isn't a show. You need audience members to keep the spirit of the show alive. It is up to our department to get those audience members and make the show that much more entertaining.

I understand completely. I'm sure your job keeps you very busy since you play such a huge role. How does negotiations play apart of having guests on the show?

Negotiations plays a big part in having guests on the show. If there is a popular celebrity who is relevant for the current time in which we would like to book for the show, we negotiate certain things with them in order to have them appear. Such things would include; providing them a flight to New York, a paid two night stay at a hotel of their choice, etc. There are many things that guests do not feel comfortable in doing/saying before appearing on the show. Therefore, we negotiate what we can and cannot ask them during the show. For example, one of our guests had a few questions in which they were not comfortable in asking therefore we replaced questions with another question in which they would have to answer if they did not want to answer the others.

Wow! It's evident that negotiating is a huge factor especially for the television industry. How important is it to separate the people from the problem when negotiating deals?

When negotiating with people it is still good to have some type of conversation with them before you go straight into what you need from them. You want the situation to be a comfortable one before handling the business. It's important to focus more on the business aspect verses personal.

I totally agree. I think it's always important to not take negotiations personal especially when it's for a business purpose. Since you are affiliated with the company, does it make your job easier? Is your work appreciated?

My job is still hard work regardless if I am affiliated with the company. However, everyone works as a team at this show. No one looks down to anyone. We all believe in working fairly and equally together. Every day we all say "good job" to each other and appreciate each other's work.

That's a good attitude to have. I'm sure with that vibe, you look forward to going to work every day! What are your overall goals as you continue to work in the entertainment industry? Where do you see yourself in five years?

My overall goals are to continue to network and get to know more people in the industry. I feel like the more people you know, the more experience you will gain. I see myself as a Publicist or Executive in charge for a show in five years.

Jeaucar Made The Beat

The intriguing thing about the music industry is that it's culturally combined. There's numerous of artists and producers. Their cultural background is what differentiates them from the rest. I've had the honor to interview a phenomenal producer from the Virgin Islands;  Lionel Blucher, also known as "Jeaucar Made The Beat". He is a musically inclined individual that has the gift of producing spectacular beats and the ability to entertain a crowd. In the interview he explains more about his background and touch basis with various accomplishments.

How did you come up with the name "Jeaucar Made The Beat" (JMTB)?

I came up with the name "Jeaucar Made The Beat" back in 2009 when I was working on my first hip-hop production entitled "Girl Pants". It was something catchy and nonetheless straight-forward as to who I am and what I do.

Yes, it is very catchy. By the way, Jeaucar is pronounced (Joe-KER). So being from the Virgin Islands, How do you include that style of music with the music you produce?

I've grown up on Soca, Calypso, and Reggae. So it's very easy for me to insert my island "flavor" in the tracks I do. Mainly the syncopation of my drums are easily identified in my music. It catches the attention of new listeners each and every day.

Who are some artists that you've worked with? Is your music internationally known?

I've worked with artists such as Grammy Nominated R. City, BV & Drastic, Claudette Peters, Dennis De Mennis, etc. The Caribbean has favored my music mostly, but my work has been heard as far as in the UK from an artist I've recently started to work with named "Lyracis".

Wow, you have great credentials thus far! What differentiates you from other producers that are already known in the entertainment industry?

My style... My style of music is a huge difference from producers in the industry because of my background.

I agree, your style of production does stand out from other producers. What would you say have been your biggest accomplishments thus far?

My biggest accomplishment thus far would be producing a track for the hip-hop duo R.City

That's a major accomplishment due that they are very popular in the entertainment industry. So Mr. Jeaucar, do you have any specific goals as a producer?

As a producer, I would like to travel and work with as many artists worldwide; and just continue to produce gifted music.

Be sure to stay aware of "Jeaucar Made The Beat". He's the next big thing!

NFL: "A Crucial Catch"

October is The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Around this time people work together to provide information on the disease. But sadly, this month is coming to an end. However, I’d like to highlight how the support of the NFL players made a great impact on my life. The NFL has a campaign called “A Crucial Catch”. Throughout October, NFL games feature players, coaches and referees wearing pink game apparel, on-field pink ribbon stencils, special game balls and pink coins – all to help raise awareness for this important campaign. I appreciate the support and awareness from the athletes. Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast. Over the course of a lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancerUnfortunately, I lost my grandmother to breast cancer earlier this year. It’s not a good feeling being the family that loses someone dear to him or her especially since this disease can move so quickly. That’s why it’s so important to bring awareness and to raise money for this cause. What most people don’t realize is that breast cancer can occur with men too. That is why I admire how the NFL has engaged the players to help bring awareness. They have set a trend with wearing pink gear for the month of October. Even young kids from elementary to high school have mocked them.  The NFL has conducted a breast cancer promotion to benefit the Society’s efforts to save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. The NFL chose the American Cancer Society as the official charity for its October 2009 – 2011 breast cancer efforts, which include awareness activities, cause-related marketing, and an online auction. If you go to www.nfl.com/pink you will be able to view all of the activities and ways that you can donate money for breast cancer. Think of it this way, each dollar you donate can be a life that you save. Just because October is coming to an end, doesn’t mean that your support has too.

The LadySonya Network

It is very important to network if you want to succeed in this industry. There are so many networking companies and opportunities that people aren’t really aware. One specifically is “The LadySonya Network”. I’ve interviewed the networking genius and was able to learn more about what her business offers not only to the entertainment industry but also to the young people who are seeking an opportunity to be apart of the movement.

Can you give me a little background about yourself? Who is Ms. Lady Sonya?

Who is LadySonya? LadySonya is somewhat an alter ego I’ve created. Back in 2008 I decided to start a business; LadySonya Music Studio LLC. In the process of developing a name for the company I thought to call myself LadySonya instead of Ms. Sonya. Which is my musician name. In a nutshell that’s where the name came from. As for who is she? LadySonya is really person who isn’t afraid of the word NO. She’s a very business minded person, always working on a business plan, a musician, a caring person, and she’s natural (hair). LOL.

Ha ha ha, nice. So what exactly is the background of your network?

The LadySonya Network is a business networking organization dedicated to highlighting, connecting, and empowering aspiring music industry people and entrepreneurs while creating opportunities for growth through valuable info about the business world.

The LadySonya Network sounds like something this industry needs. What made you begin this profound movement?

Great Question! Being a musician for over half my life and having huge dreams about doing the very thing I do now, I decided to start an organization to help people who were just like me... trying to figure it out. What sparked the move to start the company this year was the fact people would write/email literally everyday asking for help with setting goals and some would ask how did I become an entrepreneur or what advice could I give them. I thought since I’m viewed as a walking network... why not START one. So there you have it... The LadySonya Network. ;)

Wow, that’s amazing how things came together for you. What services do you offer? What kind of events?

The services are not limited. The business is fairly new, established April 2011. The ultimate service we offer is the ability to promote and market you on the website and through our social media networks. There’s a page on the website (Network Directory) that is geared to other businesses I find unique in the industry to helping up and coming artists and entrepreneurs. We also provide services such as branding, graphic designing, and developing.

Events- I look to host a huge Launch party at the beginning of next year and you can look forward to seeing informative seminars also. Also, there will be an online show aired weekly. I have soooo much in store for TLSN.... it’s really exciting!

Wonderful! I’m looking forward to everything TLSN has to offer. I think the LadySonya Network is so informative for young people. What is the main goal behind it?

Thanks! I am actually the one behind the twitter @TheLSnetwork giving valuable information through experience. I’m always learning so when I come across something/obstacle I’m excited to inform my social media family. The main goal behind everything is to EDUCATE. Whether it’s through reading my tweets, blogs, or if people decide to schedule a one-on-one consultation. That’s really the main goal. The network was built to inform those who can’t go off to school or if they went and still didn’t grasp the knowledge they needed to expand on their goals and dreams.

I agree. Your posts are very informative to the young generation. Do you offer internships for people that are interested in the Entertainment Business?

Yes! Internships are available. Send resume to team@theladysonyanetwork.com I’d love to help show the ropes to someone who is thirsty to learn things that go on behind the scenes. It’s hard work but well worth it. ;)

Yes, it’s important to first gain experience in the field and then begin to work in it. So where do you see The LadySonya Network in the future?

I see TLSN expanding to other cities outside of Atlanta. Also, I see the organization offering scholarships to help students as well as future business owners. Just helping people. I believe the main goal is to INSPIRE people all over. That’s an awarding feeling in it’s self.

Looking Past Limits

Caroline Casey is a profound speaker that has dedicated part of her life to changing how global society views people with disabilities. She did a TED talk about Looking past limits. In the beginning she engaged the audience and asked if they remembered what they wanted to be when they were 17. Caroline wanted to be a biker chick, race car driver, a cowgirl, and Mowgli from The Jungle Book because they were all about being free. She discovered at age 17 that she has been legally blind her whole life. She wasn’t aware before because her family treated her like a normal child. Her father always made her believe in everything. She later realized that she needed to be herself and to figure out what she wanted to do. Then, as founding CEO of Kanchi in Dublin, she developed a set of best practices (based on ISO 9000 quality standards) for businesses, to help them see “disabled” workers as an asset as opposed to a liability. Caroline said that freedom is being absolutely true to you. All you need is vision and belief. With those you will be able to make change happen. She is an inspirational speaker. I like how she didn’t make her disability obvious and didn’t want to be treated differently. Her model of speaking makes people look past limits and to be free. She overcame adversity by discovering who she was as a person and remaining true to herself. Her words are true and enlightening. It’s helped me develop a deeper understanding on how to remain open and unlimited. There are so many job opportunities in the entertainment business. As I continue on the road as an entrepreneur I need to be open to ideas and to try the unthinkable.

Camari Starrz: Fashion Designer

What does fashion mean to you? What is a stylist? There are many designers in this industry that are popular for their craft. Fashion is inspired by the simplest things. It’s popularity starts with the design and grows with the designer. I’ve had the opportunity to interview a gifted fashion designer, Camari Starrz. Not only is he a fashion designer but he is also a celebrity stylist and personal shopper. Doesn’t he sound like every girls dream J. Below is our interview.

Well Mr. Camari what led you to start the profound movement "The Starrz"?

Well, I’m a designer. This is why I call my work “The Starrz”. It’s just a representation of Greatness, not only for an Artist since they are the Starr, but the people that come together as one to make that Starr shine. Whether it’s your team of employees or your supportive fans. It’s for everyone. We all are Starrz.

Wow, that sounds so inspiring to young people. How did the name originate?

I came up with that name in 2009. It was catchy and powerful. A Starr is Positive. It’s like a good luck charm to me and again it just represents Greatness. I love Starrz.

I like the positive outlook that "The Starrz" has. Your custom designs are so unique. When did you first decide to create your own line of products and what are they?

I first decided to create my own line in Nov 2010 after my first fashion show in Miami. I specialize in custom shades, corsets, shoes, phone cases, hats, whatever you name I can embellish it!

Yes! Your creative technique is very unlimited and it shows through your custom designs. Who/What are your influences?

The Blondes are a big influence to me. I loved everything Alexander McQueen created. Also, Betsy Johnson for her over the top designs as well. I like the style of some musical artist too such as: Kanye West, Trina, Pharrell, Nicki Minaj, and Lady GaGa. They each offer something different to the fashion industry.

I'd have to agree since they are true fashion icons. So Camari, how does it feel when celebrities wear your custom designs?

I feel honored and great! I feel like my job is done. Not only for celebrities, but also for anyone that wears anything by Camari Starrz.

"The Starrz" is an innovative movement. Are you going to launch a website to offer your services to others any time soon?

Yes, I’m going to have a site accessible for everyone to order from. It should be up no later than December 2011.

Do yo have any projects that you're working on?

I’m planning on doing my 2nd big fashion show in March that will be held at my B-day party. The name of the show will be called “I Am The Starrz”. I also have some people working on doing a mini city-to-city Fashion show tour at different High Schools and colleges. Which I think is gonna be Starr-tastic! Lol

I'm sure your fashion show will be most talked about next year. What does the future hold for "The Starrz"?

“The Starrz” will have continuous growth of new creative ideas to expose to the fashion industry and to also have stores across the world. If not that I would want my line of designs in every high-end dept store such as: Saks, Neiman Marcus etc. They’d carry my custom pieces. I also desire to do a cologne fragrance soon.

A special thanks to Camari Starrz for agreeing to this interview. I think that it’s important to see different aspects of the fashion industry and to also know what aspiring designers are offering. I wish “The Starrz” nothing but the best as the company continues to grow.

Below are pictures of some of the customized designs and celebrities that has worn his pieces.

2011 VMA: "Time Travel"

The 2011 VMA show premiered last night on MTV. I've been waiting for over a month for this exciting show. This year's theme was "Time Travel". "We met up half a year ago and VMA Executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic came up with the idea to create a time tunnel," explained VMA main stage production designer Florian Wieder. As I was watching the show It brought a futuristic feel to it. The production of the show this year has topped the charts of previous years. The stage designer's intent was to make us feel as if we were on a mind-tripping journey. The whole design was based on a tunnel that is right in the center of the stage. The lighting during the show was very eye catching and it made it easier to interact with the performance. Also, like like the pre-show, the main broadcast incorporated bright, intriguing, pop-art style colors, and a black and white theme. This was to set the stage for the performers: Adele, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and Kanye West, Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Pitbull, and Ne-Yo. The VMAs scored its largest viewing audience ever. There were more than 12.4 million viewers throughout the show. The stage designer of this year's show is a complete genius. The stage helped enhance all of the performances. There was one that stood out the most. In my opinion, Chris Brown had the best performance. He really took advantage of the stage and the venue itself. He was creative and very acrobatic and interactive with the crowd during his performance. In the video you can see how Chris Brown was uniquely innovative. The "Time Travel" theme supported his performance. The choice of lighting used and the overall production helped create a memorable yet successful performance. This year's Video Music Award Show will go down in the Entertainment Industry's history.

Event Management

My dream one day is to operate my own Event Management Company. I have a great interest in event planning. Event Management is the process of analyzing, planning, marketing, producing, and evaluating an event. It's used in all different sectors of the Entertainment Industry. I like the process of planning parties, networking, and social events. When managing an event it is important to play the leadership role. You have to focus on the priorities, prepare for problem solving, and to keep a good vision.
